Japan Suffers Large Aftershock; Tsunami Warning Issued, Lifted

A 7.4 magnitude aftershock hit just off the coast of Japan at 11:30 PM JST (1430 UTC) on Thursday, April 7. The epicenter of this earthquake is just 73 miles from the nuclear plant at Fukushima and 41 miles from the epicenter of last month’s 9.0 earthquake. As such, Japan’s meteorological agency issued, and then lifted, a tsunami warning for a wave of up to 6 feet for the coastal area that has been already torn apart by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. These events are believed to have killed some 25,000 people and have sparked an ongoing crisis at the nuclear power plant. That tsunami was estimated to be higher than 120 feet. The ARRL asks that you keep 7.030 MHz clear for emergency use. In addition, these frequencies should also be kept clear: 3.525, 7.030, 7.077, 7.087, 7.097, 14.100, 21.200 and 28.200 MHz.

Japan triple disaster the latest

As misery continues since the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident hit north-eastern Japan on 11 March, the police say the death toll has reached 11,603 dead, with 17,258 missing.

The headquarters station of the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) in Tokyo, JA1RL became a disaster communication centre in the days immediately after the disaster.

International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 3 Secretary, Ken Yamamoto JA1CJP reports that they transmitted rescue requests including the needs of refugee centre facilities down to the basics of electricity, water and gas supplies.

Ken JA1CJP said that hand-held VHF and UHF transceivers are now being delivered to the local disaster relief centres.

“The equipment is being used to establish VHF/UHF networks for refugee centres and local disaster relief,” he said.

HF communications for disaster relief are still being operated occasionally by some volunteer radio amateurs, but JARL HQ stations were off the air by Friday, 25 March.

“JARL expresses its appreciation to all radio amateurs for their cooperation to keep 7.030MHz clear for disaster relief communications,” said Ken JA1CJP.

While relief efforts continue, concerns are still being expressed about the crippled Fukushima plant that is the worst nuclear accident in Japan’s history. The crisis has still not been overcome.

It’s a worrying time for the plant damaged by the earthquake and tsunami – measuring 8.9 on the Ritcher scale and the worst for that nation in 140-years.

Radio Amateurs in Japan Still Providing Communications Support

Amateur Radio operators became involved in the rescue effort soon after the March 11 8.9 earthquake and devastating tsunami that hit northern Japan, and that effort continues nearly two weeks later. “In the early stage following the earthquake and tsunami, several radio amateurs were able to activate their stations with car batteries or small engine generators, despite the electric power outages,” IARU Region 3 Secretary Ken Yamamoto, JA1CJP, told the ARRL. “They transmitted rescue requests and information on the disaster situation -- including refugee centers and their needs -- and the availability of basic infrastructures, such as electricity, water and gas supplies.” After the earthquake and tsunami, there was no electricity, water or gas service in many of the affected areas.

In his report to the ARRL, Yamamoto said that the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) quickly activated JA1RL, its headquarters station in Tokyo, to assist in the rescue effort. With the help of many other amateurs, it also activated its regional headquarters station JA3RL in Osaka to communicate with amateurs in the areas devastated by the tsunami, including its Tohoku headquarters station JA7RL in Sendai. “The communications were mostly on the 7 MHz band in daytime and the 3.5 MHz band at night,” Yamamoto explained. “Short range communications were also made on the 144 and 430 MHz bands. The information gathered through Amateur Radio communications was reported to the rescue and disaster relief organizations for their appropriate deployment. Some other amateurs accepted health-and-welfare inquiries from the [impacted] areas and then posted the information on the Internet.”

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications -- that country’s equivalent of the FCC -- approved the use of an additional 300 UHF/VHF transceivers in the affected areas.

With gasoline and natural gas in short supply, Yamamoto said that the fuel shortage was “a very serious problem in the cold climate. Calls for fuel were received over radio from many disaster areas, but delivery remained very difficult at least for the first week as the access roads were hacked up everywhere. Several days later, some Amateur Radio clubs reached the affected areas with their radio equipment and established communications for supporting disaster relief.”

Yamamoto told the ARRL that several radio equipment manufacturers offered “hundreds of VHF/UHF transceivers to JARL for the use at refugee centers and local disaster relief centers. These transceivers should help to establish mutual communications between refugee and disaster relief centers, and to facilitate smooth and appropriate delivery of disaster relief goods.”

As of noon JST on March 23 (0300 UTC), Japanese authorities announced that 9408 people have been killed and another 14,716 people have been reported missing in the earthquake and tsunami.

Japan remains under its worst threat to an ever rising toll, widespread destruction, power, fuel and water shortages follow the massive earthquake, tsunami and failed 40-year old nuclear power station.

IARU Region 3 Secretary, Ken Yamamoto JA1CJP said the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) HQ station JA1RL and other amateur stations are maintaining their effort to support the disaster relief operation.

Ken JA1CJP said, ''In less damaged areas, the electric power supply is being restored gradually and local amateur radio club members have started to establish stations at shelters."

The information is being coordinated as part of an organised rescue and relief effort. It seems likely to continue for some weeks and months to come.

The 8.9 on the Richter scale quake hit off north-eastern Sendai and triggered a ten-metre tsunami on Friday.

Ken JA1CJP quoting local news sources said, "The situation is getting worse. On March 15, police announced that 2,414 people have been killed (up from 1,627 24 hours earlier) and 3,118 are reported missing (about double in the same period).

"Some 55,380 houses/buildings were damaged by the earthquake and 3,000 houses washed away by the tsunami."

Rescue teams have arrived and started their activities in the affected areas. They came from many nations including Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, China, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Australia and Russia.

In all the Japanese government has received help from 91 nations and territories and nine international organisations.

Ken JA1CJP said another worry is leakage of radio-active gasses at the Fukushima nuclear plant which was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.

A shortage of fuel, disruption to rail and road transport have been reported from many affected areas still recovering from the worst earthquake in 140 years followed by a widespread tsunami that swept away so much.

JA1RL continues to operate under instruction to be an emergency traffic centre and increasingly receiving help from JARL members in the affected area.

It is using the 7 MHz SSB, 144 MHz SSB/FM and 430 MHz SSB/FM.

Many other stations are active and are using various frequencies including some battery powered and others using small generators to exchange rescue and disaster relief operation information with JA1RL and others.

While 3525, 7030, 7043 and 7075 have been mentioned as in use, it's wise to keep those and all of the Centre of Emergency (CoA) clear of normal and non-urgent traffic. There is no call for additional foreign radio amateurs.

Massive Earthquake Hits Japan, Tsunami Warnings Issued

An 8.9 earthquake struck Japan at 2:46 JST (0546 UTC) on Friday, March 11. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), this is largest earthquake in 140 years to hit the island nation. The earthquake occurred in the western Pacific Ocean, 81 miles east of Sendai, Honshu, Japan. Its epicenter was 232 miles from Tokyo. News reports by the Tokyo Broadcasting System indicate that at least 200 people have died and another 88,000 are missing in six different prefectures. The quake triggered tsunami waves as high as 33 feet off the coast of Japan.

At this time, there are no reports of Amateur Radio involvement in the disaster response. Even so, IARU Region 1 Emergency Communications Coordinator Greg Mossop, G0DUB, has asked that extra care be taken so as to not interfere with any emergency traffic. The IARU Region III Emergency Center of Activity frequencies are 3.600, 7.110, 14.300, 18.160 and 21.360 MHz. Other suggested emergency frequencies being reported by Amateur Radio operators from Japan include 7.130, 14.230 and 21.230 MHz.

Icko Suzuki, JA1BPA, of Tokyo, told the ARRL that telephone lines and the Internet are “okay for the JA1 (Tokyo) area, but the Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate prefectures (JA7 area) are hard hit and I cannot reach my brother who lives there.” Suzuki said that in Japan, emergency communications activities and support normally occur on 40 meters and on VHF, “so normal DX bands should not be affected.”

In Hawaii, Ron Hashiro, AH6RH, told the ARRL that his state is preparing for a tsunami: “The water level at Kahului Harbor -- the main harbor on the Island of Maui -- dropped 5 feet at 3:54 this morning HST (1354 UTC).” A quake measuring 4.5 was felt in Hawaii, 150 minutes following the Japan tremor.

Less than an hour after the Sendai earthquake hit, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu, Hawaii, issued a Tsunami Warning for the State of Hawaii, saying that “an earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours.”

The PTWC also issued a Tsunami Warning for Japan, Russia, the Marcus Islands, the Northern Marianas Islands, Guam, Wake Island and Taiwan. A Tsunami Watch was issued for Yap, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Belau, Midway Island, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Johnston Island, the Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (WCATWC) in Palmer, Alaska, issued a Tsunami Warning for the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion, California to the Oregon-Washington border and for the coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles west of Adak) to Attu, Alaska. A Tsunami Advisory was issued for the coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico border to Point Concepcion, California and for the coastal areas of Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-Washington border to Amchitka Pass, Alaska.

A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest can last 5-15 minutes or more, and extensively flood coastal areas. The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. Tsunami wave heights cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami waves efficiently wrap around islands. All shores are at risk, no matter which direction they face. The trough of a tsunami wave may temporarily expose the seafloor, but the area will quickly flood again. Extremely strong and unusual near-shore currents can accompany a tsunami. Debris picked up and carried by a tsunami amplifies its destructive power. Simultaneous high tides or high surf can significantly increase the tsunami hazard.

According to the BBC, coastal areas in the Philippines, and other parts of the Pacific were evacuated ahead of the tsunami’s expected arrival. The first waves, currently about 4 feet high, have started reaching Hawaii. New Zealand downgraded its alert to a marine threat, meaning strong and unusual currents were expected.

Initially reported as 7.9 by the USGC, the magnitude of the Japan earthquake was quickly restated as 8.8 and then 8.9. According to the USGS, this earthquake is the fifth strongest quake in the world since 1900, the seventh largest in recorded history and the largest tremor to hit quake-prone Japan in 140 years. The largest quake ever recorded hit Chile in 1960, measuring 9.5.

As of now, the only entities conducting emergency nets are the Oregon ARES®/RACES on 3.964 MHz and SATERN on 14.265 MHz. As the ARRL hears of more emergency nets related to the earthquake and tsunamis, we will post this information and frequencies on the ARRL EmComm Twitter page and the ARRL website.

Gelombang kuat partikel plasma tercaj yang terpancar dari tompok matahari sebesar planet Jupiter itu, iaitu yang terkuat dalam tempoh empat tahun, sudah mengganggu komunikasi radio di selatan China.
Pancaran kelas X itu, iaitu yang terbesar dalam kategorinya, meletus pada 9.56 pagi kelmarin.
"Ia adalah insiden suria yang paling kuat dan mampu menyebabkan gangguan radio serta ribut radiasi berpanjangan dan mengganggu telekomunikasi serta grid kuasa," menurut NASA.

Ribut geomagnetik biasanya berlarutan 24 hingga 48 jam tetapi ada antaranya mampu bertahan sehingga beberapa hari.

Radio communication still kicking

In a growing age of cell phones, radio seems like an outdated mode of communication, but Tauranga Emergency Communications Group president Brian Heywood says amateur radio is still very much alive and kicking.

Gordon Cooper explains the radios to Timi and Hamiria Tawa at Gate Pa shopping centre.

“It’s not outdated. We are used by the Police for search and rescue and civil defence when they need radio communication.”

Celebrating Amateur Radio Day on Saturday, shoppers at Gate Pa shopping centre can experience how to use amateur radio communication. Brian says they have been communicating with other amateur radio users across the country.

“We have set up a van here with various different types of radios, and have been talking to Hamilton and Napier this morning. Just before, we overheard a conversation between a chap in Arizona and a man in Hamilton.”

Using the frequency of 3.6MHz, Brian says “you would normally expect to be able to get all the way down New Zealand on that frequency. Using radio repeaters through the internet, you can talk to overseas as well”.

Amateur radio, or ham radio, is what Brian describes as a “multipurpose hobby”, where people use radio communication equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training.

“We aren’t here to make money out of it. It is a great way to make international friendship. One of the men here went for a trip through the United States 10 years ago, and he stayed with hams all the way through. It just opens up a sphere of friendship”

Amateur radio group praised in Brazil floods

Civil defence forces in Nova Friburgo praised the efforts of a local group of amateur radio enthusiasts who had helped them co-ordinate the rescue efforts in the first hours after the landslides, according to a report on the BBC News website.

"Without their help, we couldn't have done anything in those first two days," Lt Col Roberto Robadey said of the group, which took their radio equipment to key points across the town to provide a communication link between rescue groups.

The Brazilian Air Force said it was installing a communication centre in Itaipava, so people could make phone calls and access data in their attempts to track down missing relatives.

NASA seeks Amateur Radio operators' aid

The US Space Agency NASA has asked for the help of Amateur Radio operators to help in receiving the signal from NanoSail-D on 437.270MHz.

The NASA Press release says:

Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 11:30 a.m. EST, engineers at Marshall SpacemFlight Center in Huntsville, Ala., confirmed that the NanoSail-D nanosatellite ejected from Fast Affordable Scientific and Technology Satellite, FASTSAT. The ejection event occurred spontaneously and was identified this morning when engineers at the center analyzed onboard FASTSAT telemetry. The ejection of NanoSail-D also has been confirmed by ground-based satellite tracking assets.

Amateur radio operators are asked to listen for the signal to verify NanoSail-D is operating. This information should be sent to the NanoSail-D dashboard at:
http://nanosaild.engr.scu.edu/dashboard.htm .

The NanoSail-D beacon signal can be found at 437.270 MHz.

The NanoSail-D science team is hopeful the nanosatellite is healthy and can complete its solar sail mission.
After ejection, a timer within NanoSail-D begins a three-day countdown as the satellite orbits the Earth. Once the timer reaches zero, four booms will quickly deploy and the NanoSail-D sail will start to unfold to a 100-square-foot polymer sail. Within five seconds the sail fully unfurls.

Weather Service Honors Radio Operators

North Little Rock - The National Weather Service (NWS) holds an event to recognize amateur radio operators on Friday and Saturday.

According to the NWS amateur radio operators, known as HAMs, provide a vital public service by passing on emergency information during severe weather outbreaks.

The event, Skywarn Recognition Day, is held in cooperation with the Amateur Radio Relay League. HAM radio operators will operate at NWS in North Little Rock from 6 p.m. Friday, until 6 p.m. Saturday.

During the event, HAMs will attempt to contact as many NWS offices and radio stations as possible. In 2009, 35 offices were contacted as were 300 stations.

Hundreds of HAMs in Arkansas are certified storm spotters. In February of 2008, a HAM operator was the first person to provide information on a tornado that struck Mountain View. Electricity and telephone service was knocked out by the storm.

Again in October of this year, a HAM operator was the first to report tornado damage in the Crystal Valley area of Pulaski County.

During severe weather emergencies, HAMs operate a base station at the NWS office in North Little Rock.

Pakistani Amateurs Team Up to Provide Communications, Relief Support for Flood Victims

According to the Pakistan Amateur Radio Society (PARS) -- that country’s IARU Member-Society -- radio amateurs in Pakistan have teamed up with the Islamabad Jeep Club (IJC) and Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) to provide relief activities in those areas of Pakistan devastated by floods. The groups will supply food, tents and medical support to the northern flood affected areas of Nowshera, Charsadda and central Sargodha districts. “The cellular services are down and so is the landline,” the PARS Web site reports. “Last week, the joint team carried out a survey in the north and the center of the country, and to its dismay, the situation isn’t promising. Restoration of cellular services and landlines could take months.”

PARS already has a 2 meter repeater in these places and say a “weak signal can be heard in these areas, but [they] would need cross-band repeaters to further increase its strength and allow penetration into the remote areas. This would result in effective communication through handheld [transceivers], rather than relying on base stations where there is an issue with electricity.”

PARS has set aside the following frequencies for relief efforts: 145.700 MHz (receive 145.400 MHz, transmit 144.200 MHZ, CTCSS 88.5 MHz), 7.070 MHz, 14.200 MHZ and 14.300 MHz, 435.050 MHz (CTCSS 88.55 MHz)

In order to address the communication breakdown, PARS and the IJC created two teams: one for the northern cities, linking Islamabad with Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda, and the other to link cities in the center of the country, including Sargodha, Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan.

In the past few weeks, monsoon rains have deluged Pakistan, followed by disastrous floods that PARS said “were never seen in the last eight decades in some regions. These floods have impacted millions of Pakistanis who need help from the international community with providing food, clean drinking water, shelter and medical aid.” In the second week of the disaster, floods are spreading to the Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan Provinces, as well as the Kashmir region where thousands of villages have been destroyed and the situation is worsening.

PARS members, in partnership the IJC, has initiated a relief mission to help the suffering population, and are raising funds to provide essential relief supplies to the families affected by these floods. Until now, more than 1500 people have lost their lives, thousands of villages and towns are destroyed and more than 4.5 million people are left homeless or displaced in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in the northwest region of the country. PARS reports that due to “large scale destruction of roads and bridges, relief agencies are finding it difficult to reach the areas where people are still stranded. Once communication with those areas is established, authorities are expecting [to find] a high number of fatalities.”

PARS said they have targeted three areas that need a great deal of assistance:

Pashtun Garhi and Pir Sabak in the Nowshera District: (34° 01’ 13.94”N, 71° 49’ 54.96”E) Approximately 14,000-16,000 affected/displaced; immediate requirements are tents; food and drinkable water
Dharkhanawalla in the Sargodha District: (31° 50’ 10.90”, N 72° 19’ 33.36”E) According to PARS, the town itself is not affected, but many villages east of the town are under water; food is an immediate requirement
Mera Prang in the Charsada District: (34° 7’ 36.51”, N 71°46’ 31.48”E) Approximately 300 families are without homes; tents are the most-need necessity here.

Amateur radio operators continue to play a vital role in supplying communications during emergency situations.

Members of the Ashland Area Amateur Radio Club gathered in the Emergency Operations Center at the Ashland County Sheriff's Office in taking part in the hazardous materials and severe weather functional exercise.

Amateur radio operator Jeff Hardman says amateur radio operators are only amateur in the sense they're not paid for their services and are strictly volunteers.

But he says they consider themselves professional amateur radio operators.

International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend

A total of 100 registrations have been received so far at the website illw.net for this year's event on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of August, Jim Linton VK3PC reports.

"It will be the 11th annual weekend run by Scotland's Ayr Amateur Radio Group GM0AYR.

The registrations to date are from 19 countries with nearly half of them from Germany and Australia who always strongly support this fun event.

Other countries include Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Honduras, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, USA and Wales.

It's only early days and organisers of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, the Ayr Amateur Radio Group, are hopeful that with improved HF propagation the record of 442 registrations set last year could be beaten.

Radio Club de Chile Lists Emergency Frequencies, E-mail Address (Mar 6, 2010) -- Radio Club de Chile ( RCCH ) President Dr Galdino Besomi, CE3PG, reports that the situation in Chile is “very complex” as the country suffers aftershocks registering 6.0 or higher after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile on February 27. “Red Chilena Nor Austral de Servicio ( RECNA ) and RCCH networks are working in coordination whit the Army of Chile, handling information about people localization, condition of roads and support for the emergency administration,” IARU Region 2 (Area G) Emergency Coordinator Jorge Sierra, LU1AS, told he ARRL. He has asked the amateur community to keep the following frequencies free from non-essential, emergency traffic: 14.200, 7.050, 7.095 and 3.738 MHz. “Other frequencies could be in use, especially on 40 meters. Before using any frequency it is very important to make sure it’s free,” he advised. The RCCH has set up an e-mail address where people can request information concerning people affected by the earthquakes.

Haiti Earthquake - Final

From 1800UTC 22 January the HF frequencies used to respond to the immediate needs of the Haiti Earthquake, 14.300MHz, 14.265MHz , 7.045MHz, 7.065MHz, 7.265MHz, 3.720MHz, 3.977MHz will return to normal use.

The groups who have been passing messages on those frequencies will revert to monitoring mode or their normal operations.

There are still a number of radio amateurs in the country attached to various relief groups who may still be heard on the amateur bands on a number of frequencies according to their particular needs to maintain contact with their home countries.

Please maintain the normal procedures of;

* Listen before transmitting
* If you hear any station passing emergency traffic then leave the frequency clear and avoid causing QRM.

In the brutal aftermath of Haiti's earthquake, Jean-Robert Gaillard turned to his low-tech radio for solace and for a lifeline.

When the earthquake hit, the 57-year-old from Petionville, Haiti, found most of his normal lines of communication -- his cell phone, the Internet, even his ability to walk down the street and talk to someone -- severed by the disaster.

But Gaillard used a neighbor's generator to power up his radio and connect to a handful of amateur radio enthusiasts in the United States -- many of whom were eagerly listening to radio static for calls like his.

Unlike many other people in Haiti, Gaillard was able to contact family members in the United States soon after the January 12 earthquake hit to tell them he had survived.

In those first hellish moments, that connection seemed like a miracle. "It relieved the tension of my family members," he said, speaking by Skype from Haiti on Tuesday, which he says wasn't possible until more recently.

"They could hear my voice. They knew that I was OK."

Much has been made about the role flashier technologies like Twitter, Skype and text messaging have played in helping disaster victims find loved ones and communicate with international aid workers. But it is worth noting that, when all else fails, the low-tech hum of a radio frequency is sometimes the only line of communication that's open.

On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -
1. A for March (First Qtr),
2. B for June (Second Qtr),
3. C for Sept (Third Qtr), &
4. D for December (Fourth Qtr).

The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.

KUANTAN 14 Nov. - Jabatan Meteorologi Pahang menasihatkan penduduk
di beberapa daerah negeri ini supaya bersiap sedia dan berjaga-jaga
berikutan hujan lebat diramalkan bermula esok hingga Khamis ini.

Pengarahnya, Md. Kamsan Hamdan berkata, pada Khamis lepas, pihaknya
telah mengeluarkan amaran kuning iaitu nasihat berikutan hujan
sederhana dan kadangkala lebat yang boleh menyebabkan banjir.

Beliau berkata, antara daerah yang dikenal pasti akan berlakunya
banjir ialah Kuantan, Maran, Rompin, Temerloh, Rompin dan kawasan
rendah yang sering berlaku banjir.

''Bagaimanapun, kita akan sentiasa berjaga-jaga dan mempertingkatkan
arahan kepada amaran jingga dan merah jika hujan masih berlarutan,"
katanya kepada pemberita sempena Kempen Kesedaran Awam- Mengenai Cuaca
Ekstrem, Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami di sini hari ini.
Akhbar hari ini melaporkan Jabatan Meteorologi mengeluarkan amaran
kemungkinan banjir di kawasan rendah di Pahang dan Johor berikutan
hujan lebat dijangka berterusan sehingga pagi ini.

Menurut Md. Kamsan, amaran awal yang dikeluarkan tidak akan berkesan
sepenuhnya tanpa adanya kesedaran awam terhadap bahaya bencana cuaca
ekstrem seperti banjir, gempa bumi dan tsunami.

''Oleh itu kami mengharapkan kesedaran dan kerjasama daripada
masyarakat agar dapat mengurangkan risiko kehilangan nyawa dan
kemusnahan harta-benda," jelasnya.

Dalam pada itu, pihaknya telah meletakkan alat pengesan tsunami di
pantai Teluk Chempedak di sini bagi membolehkan orang ramai membuat
persediaan menghadapi bencana alam itu.

''Sekiranya berlaku gempa bumi di laut dan menunjukkan tanda-tanda
tsunami maka siren yang dipasang akan berbunyi dan terus dikesan ke ibu
pejabat.
''Dalam tempoh 15 minit, maklumat tersebut akan dihebahkan kepada
orang ramai supaya bersiap sedia menghadapinya dan bantuan akan segera
disalurkan," jelasnya.

Australian hams prepare for disasters

With the weather bringing disasters to many parts of the Asia/Oceania Regions, we should reflect on the importance of our hobby in a greater scheme.

Going by news reports, there is severe flooding in southern India and the Phillipines, earth quake damage in Sumatra and tsunami devestation in Samoa and Tonga with such immense human costs.

According to Jim Linton, VK3PC, on the WIA web site, local radio amateurs are definitely involved in support roles in Indonesia and the Phillipines.

It is to meet the demands of such crises that the Global Amateur Radio Emergency Conferences have been convened. These annual meetings have drawn on the previous S.E. Asian tsunami and the Chinese earthquakes and the outcomes are being reviewed through at least two United Nations Agencies.

The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) has a committee developing a basic training course for emergency communications which will provide a consistent level of skills to those completing the course satisfactorily.

What this means is that as all grades of licence in Australia have access to HF frequencies and even with poor sun spot numbers, some of the countries affected by natural disaster are closer to northern VK-land than our major cities are to each other, we radio amateurs can assist in message handling and support.

The reality is that our hobby is international in reach.

Ham radio supports disasters

A severe tropical storm in The Phillipines and earthquakes in Indonesia have seen radio amateurs providing emergency communications and other relief and recovery assistance.

Philippines Amateur Radio Association (PARA) President, Dr Joey Panganiban DU1BP (pictured right) reports that a tropical storm named "Ondoy" hit the Philippines five days ago creating a tragic calamity with hams swinging into action to help. Joey DU1BP said, "We have mobilized our amateur radio clubs for the relief operations. The frequencies of 7.045 MHz have been used for general announcements while 2-metres FM is for our community operations."

The disaster has affected more than two million people and the death toll is officially at least 1,100. Joey DU1BP said, "All amateur and civic radio clubs are now on operation in Metro Manila under the guidance of the National Telecommunications Commission and PARA." He said the PARA Secretariat has been designated to receive donations and soliciting donations both in kind and cash for the victims. Joe DU1BP said, "What the evacuees need is food that are ready to eat (those without much preparation) such as canned goods, noodles, rice, bread, coffee, milk, sugar, salt and water." "They also need medical attention and medications needed for cough, colds, fever, diarrhea and vitamins. These items will be repacked and given direct to the recipients, using community officials as contact points."

Meantime a powerful earthquake rocked western Indonesia on Wednesday, trapping thousands under collapsed buildings and triggering landslides. At least 75 people were killed on Sumatra island after the 7.6 on the Richter scale earthquake strike. In a brief message just hours after that disaster from the Organisasi Amatir Radio Indonesia (ORARI), received by IARU Region 3 Disaster Communications Committee Chairman, Jim Linton VK3PC, it has been confirmed that hams are involved there too. Wisnu Widjaja W1SNU/YB0AZ reports "We are active on the field now to support the emergency Communications in West & South Sumatera, Indonesia. Now, we are using 2-meters and 40-meter band."

More information can be expected in coming days. However no reports so far of amateur radio emergency communications in the Pacific as a tsunami hit Samoa leaving trail of death and destruction.

Heboh SMS ribut kuat landa Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR - Jabatan Meteorologi semalam menafikan mesej khidmat pesanan ringkas (SMS) yang tersebar luas menyatakan satu ribut kuat akan melanda Malaysia malam tadi ekoran ramalan cuaca mengenai Taufan Parma akan melanda Filipina lewat malam tadi.

Pegawai bertugas Jabatan Meteorologi ketika dihubungi berkata, SMS itu yang mendakwa taufan berkelajuan 222 km/j akan melanda adalah satu khabar angin dan menasihati orang ramai supaya tidak panik.

SMS itu turut meminta orang ramai mengambil langkah berjaga-jaga dan tidak berada di jalanan.

Taufan Parma melanda Luzon pada Sabtu mengakibat tanah runtuh dan banjir serta mengorbankan 16 orang. Taufan, yang kini dikategorikan ribut tropika dengan kelajuan 55 knot, kini bertiup di perairan barat Luzon.

Katanya, ribut tropika itu diramalkan bergerak ke arah barat menghala pulau Hainan dalam beberapa hari ini.

"Kelajuan ribut tropika Parma ini akan membentuk gelombang kuat di Laut China Selatan tetapi tiada petunjuk ia akan melanda negara ini," katanya.

Jabatan Meteorologi semalam mengeluarkan amaran kategori pertama mengenai angin kuat dan laut bergelora dengan angin barat daya berkelajuan 40-50 km/j dan ombak setinggi 3.5 meter di perairan Phuket dan Samui di Thailand, Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Reef North, Layang-layang, Labuan dan Sabah yang akan berterusan sehingga Jumaat. - Bernama

West Sumatra Earthquake

It is understood that a number of Amateur Radio stations are assisting in the aftermath of the earthquake in West Sumatra.

YB5ZA is located in the Governor's office of West Sumatra province, and supports the disaster management command post. They are operating on 7.0650 MHz, 145.500 MHz and VHF repeater RX 146.260 / TX 146.860 MHz.

YB5ZDD is on the air using 7.065 MHz SSB from the Minangkabau international airport, Padang city, West Sumatra.

Radio club takes part in emergency drill

STAFF REPORT

DANVILLE — Local radio operators will participate for the first time in an emergency test situation this weekend.

Members of the Vermilion County Amateur Radio Association will take part today in the annual Simulated Emergency Test put together by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio.

The local radio association will be set up at their headquarters on Woodbury Hill Road, the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency along Georgetown Road and at Provena United Samari-tans Medical Center.

The test is an annual exercise in emergency communications. The local amateur radio group will use emergency power at each location and provide communications for the event for agencies such as EMA and the American Red Cross, as well as the hospital.

The scenario this year centers on a large earthquake at 7 a.m. today near Murphysborough in southern Illinois. The event gives communicators the opportunity to focus on the emergency-communications capability in the community.

Amateur ham radio users to contact orbiting space station

KUALA LUMPUR: Fancy chatting with someone in the International Space Station orbiting the earth? You may get a chance to if you’re among the participants at this year’s HITBSecConf — an annual international network-security conference.

The special session will see the Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Service Society (Mares) — a non-profit, non-government organisation — attempt to establish a live communications feed with the station during the conference.

Normally, Mares members provide communications service in times of disasters or when normal communications channels are either down or congested.

The session is one of the highlights of HITBSecConf 2009, which is scheduled for Oct 5-8 at The Crowne Plaza Mutiara hotel here.

Also while the conference focuses on network security, its lock-picking workshop is popular among the participants.

This year’s workshop will be run by members from Toool — The Open Organisation of Lockpickers — and will provide attendees with the opportunity to try their hand at picking locks.

They’ll also get a chance to crack safes while some of the locks that’ll be worked on will be provided by the public.

Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, founder and CEO of Hack In The Box (M) Sdn Bhd which organises the HITBSecConf series, said the objective of the event is to teach people how to better protect their property — both in the real world and in cyberspace.

In the case of lockpicking, he said, “Many people are unaware of how easy it is to compromise locks and other physical security mechanisms.”

He said the lock-picking workshop would educate participants in a fun and interesting manner. “Attendees are encouraged to bring their own locks from home,” he added.

B) Ribut Tropika 19W, "Parma" dikesan berada di Latitud 8.3 Utara dan Longitud 139.3 Timur, 1717 km ke Timur Cebu, Filipina pada jam 11:00 pagi, 29 September 2009. Ribut Tropika ini dijangka akan bergerak ke arah Barat dengan kelajuan 27 kmsj.
Ribut Tropika ini berada kira-kira 2361 km ke Timur Sandakan dan 2484 km ke Timur Kudat, Sabah.

Dipertingkatkan dari Amaran Kategori Kedua yang dikeluarkan pada 8.10 malam 23/9/2009.
Taufan (17W) Ketsana telah dicerap pada kedudukan berhampiran Latitud 15.5 Utara dan Longitud 109.2 Timur pada 11:00 pagi, 29 September 2009. Ia dijangka akan bergerak ke arah Barat dengan kelajuan 14 kmsj.
Sehubungan itu, angin kencang baratdaya dengan kelajuan dari 60 kmsj dan laut bergelora dengan ketinggian ombak sehingga 5.5 meter di perairan Condore, Reef North, Palawan, Sabah Barat dan Layang-layang dijangka akan berterusan sehingga Rabu, 30 September 2009.
Keadaan angin kencang dan laut bergelora ini berbahaya kepada kepada semua aktiviti pantai dan perkapalan termasuk pekerja di pelantar minyak.

SEKSYEN B : AMARAN ANGIN KENCANG DAN LAUT BERGELORA (KATEGORI KEDUA)
Angin kencang Baratdaya dengan kelajuan 50 - 60 kmsj dan laut bergelora dengan ombak mencapai ketinggian 4.5 meter di perairan Phuket, Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Samui, Kelantan, Terengganu dan Labuan dijangka akan berterusan hingga Khamis, 1 Oktober 2009.
Keadaan angin kencang dan laut bergelora ini berbahaya kepada semua aktiviti perkapalan dan pantai termasuk menangkap ikan dan perkhidmatan feri.
SEKSYEN C : AMARAN ANGIN KENCANG DAN LAUT BERGELORA (KATEGORI PERTAMA)
Angin kencang Baratdaya dengan kelajuan 40 - 50 kmsj dan laut bergelora dengan ombak mencapai ketinggian 3.5 meter di perairan Reef South (perairan Sarawak) dijangka akan berterusan hingga Selasa, 29 September 2009.
Keadaaan angin kencang dan laut bergelora ini adalah berbahaya kepada bot-bot kecil, rekreasi laut dan sukan laut.

Masalah berikutan kesesakan luar biasa pada talian pulih tengah malam

KUALA LUMPUR: Berjuta-juta pelanggan syarikat telekomunikasi mudah alih, Celcom (M) Berhad di seluruh negara terjejas hampir 12 jam berikutan kesesakan luar biasa pada talian pasca bayar dan prabayar bermula jam 9 pagi semalam.

Perkhidmatan yang terjejas adalah panggilan keluar dan panggilan masuk dalam rangkaian Celcom, tetapi kemudahan lain termasuk SMS, MMS, panggilan antarabangsa (IDD), GPRS, perantauan dan panggilan ke talian tetap serta rangkaian lain berjalan lancar.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Celcom, Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, berkata gangguan hanya membabitkan perkhidmatan panggilan suara antara pelanggan talian berkenaan, manakala perkhidmatan jalur lebar tidak terjejas.

"Gangguan berlaku secara berperingkat kira-kira jam 9 pagi dan mula meruncing menjelang waktu puncak pada jam 12 tengah hari. Ia berikutan peningkatan luar jangka kadar penggunaan talian sebanyak lima kali ganda pada hari raya kelima (semalam).

"Kita memang menjangka akan berlaku peningkatan penggunaan talian sempena musim perayaan kali ini tetapi tidaklah sampai lima kali ganda. Belum pernah berlaku kejadian sebegini dalam sejarah Celcom," katanya ketika dihubungi semalam.

Sambil memohon maaf kepada pelanggan, beliau berkata, dua 'node' (pusat pertukaran transmisi) syarikat berkenaan di Kepong dan Perda, Seberang Prai mengalami kesesakan teruk sehingga kehilangan isyarat panggilan.

"Celcom ada dua node. Biasanya, satu node sudah cukup untuk menampung penggunaan, manakala satu lagi sebagai unit sokongan. Bagaimanapun, kedua-duanya sesak teruk hari ini (semalam) hingga isyarat panggilan hilang.

"Bayangkan, 160 juta SMS dikendalikan pada malam raya saja, manakala panggilan IDD meningkat sembilan kali ganda dan panggilan biasa lima kali ganda. Dari malam raya hingga raya keempat memang tiada gangguan sehinggalah hari ini apabila pengguna mula bergerak dan bekerja di kawasan liputan kita," katanya.

Shazalli turut memaklumkan pasukan teknikal Celcom berjaya memulihkan gangguan itu sepenuhnya menjelang 12 tengah malam tadi.

East Malaysia IOTA operation

Steve, 9M6DXX, from the Island of Borneo (OC-088) plans to busy from East Malaysia over next two months.

Look for Steve to be active as 9M8Z from Sarawak, East Malaysia (OC-088), between October 22-26th.

Activity will be SSB only but will also include operations in the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 24-25th) as a Single-Op/All- Band/High-Power/Unassisted entry.

QSL via LoTW, or QSL direct or by the Bureau to M0URX (or request direct or bureau cards on-line - see info at: http://www.m0urx.com/direct-a-bureau-instructions.html).

In early November, Steve 9M6DXX will be joined by John 9M6XRO and the operators will activate Pulau Labuan Island (OC-133) between November 6-8th (and possibly for one or two hours on November 9th after 0000z).

The callsigns and operations will be as follows:
9M6DXX/P - On 80-10 meters; SSB only.
9M6XRO/P - On 160-10 meters; CW and RTTY.

Each stations will be using amplifiers to a multi-band vertical and a 160m inverted-L, both mounted very close to the ocean. Operators hope it will be possible to operate on 160m CW at the same time as SSB on the other bands.

QSL both 9M6DXX/P and 9M6XRO/P via M0URX, either direct,
by the bureau or LoTW.

Kebelakangan ini ramai bercakap tentang perlakuan ham yang tidak mengikut SOP.

Mengikut Mr Beattie, wakil Region 1 ke Mesuyarat IARU Administrative Council di German pada Jun 2008, terdapat persepsi bahawa Operating Standard telah dirosakkan oleh:

(1) sebilangan kecil [ham] yang "suka buat bising,"

(2) sebilangan ham yang beranggapan sesuatu frekuensi itu milik mutlak mereka sahaja, dan

(3) sebilangan ham yang seolah-olah bajingan (anarchist) yang sentiasa ingin berkonfrontasi dengan pihak berkuasa.

Mesyuarat IARU Administrative Council pada 24-25 Jun 2008 mengambil ketetapan menerima pakai satu dokumen bertajuk "Ethics and Operating Procedure for the Radio Amateur" sebagai dokumen rujukan semua pihak.

further noting that poor operating behavior adversely affects the enjoyment of all radio amateurs and does not enhance the reputation of the Amateur Radio Services,

that all radio amateurs be encouraged to operate to the highest levels of proficiency, with proper consideration for others using the amateur radio bands;
that the necessary effort be made by member-societies to teach newcomers and others correct operating behavior;

and therefore

endorses and recommends the principles set out in the booklet “Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur”1 by John Devoldere, ON4UN and Marc Demeuleneere, ON4WW, and
encourages each IARU Region to consider this booklet, with a view to adopting it, including any Regional variations that might be felt appropriate.

MARES Terengganu bersama MARES Kelantan dengan kerjasama PEMANCAR Zon Kuala Terengganu dan Zon Kuala Berang akan mengambil bahagian dalam event Minggu Rumah Api Peringkat Antarabangsa 2009 pada 15 dan 16 Ogos 2009.

Event ini akan berlangsung di medan letak kereta Taman Shahbandar, Kuala Terengganu berhampiran dengan rumah api Taman Shahbandar. Disamping itu juga diadakan pameran Radio Amatur.

International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 2009

International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 2009 (Aug 2, 2009) -- More than 300 lighthouses in more than 51 countries -- from Argentina to Wales -- will be on the air for 2009 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW) organized by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group (AARG) in Scotland. The event, held for the 11th year in a row, takes place Saturday, August 15 0001 UTC-Sunday, August 16 2359 UTC. While not a contest, the ILLW is more of a QSO Party and Amateur Radio demonstration. The ILLW aims to raise public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and the need for their preservation and restoration, promote Amateur Radio and foster international goodwill.

Dari Kuala Terengganu, detik fenomena Gerhana Matahari ini dijangka akan mula berlaku pada jam 8.24 pagi dan dijangka sampai ke fasa maksimumnya (13% maksimum), pada pukul 9.08 pagi serta berakhir pada jam 9.56 pagi.

Pastikan anda mengetahui cara selamat melihat gerhana matahari, seperti berikut:

1. Menggunakan penebat (penapis) alpha-hydrogen

2. Menggunakan penebat aluminium mylar

3. Menggunakan filem hitam putih (monokrom) yang telah didedahkan kepada cahaya dan telah diproses. Filem yang telah terdedah dan diproses akan menghasilkan lapisan perak yang melindungi mata daripada bahaya cahaya matahari.

4. Menggunakan kaca penebat (glass-filter) yang khusus untuk matahari

5. Menggunakan kaedah projection seperti lakaran di atas. Teleskop atau binokular dengan tripod lebih sesuai digunakan.

6. Menggunakan kamera lubang jarum

7. Paling tidak, anda boleh memerhatikan bayang matahari pada tanah yang melalui celah celah dahan pokok. Anda mungkin dapat menyaksikan suatu yang cukup menarik. Boleh juga memerhatikan cahaya matahari yang melalui lubang kecil pada atap rumah anda yang menyinari lantai/dinding rumah. Perhatikan cahaya pada lantai/dinding tersebut..

Sekali lagi negeri Terengganu menjadi pilihan menjadi tuan rumah dalam Perkhemahan Kadet Bomba Peringkat Kebangsaan 2009 yang mana berlangsung di Akademi Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, Wakaf Tapai, Marang, Terengganu dari 22 hingga 27 Jun 2009.

Dan sekali lagi bertugas macam biasalah merakamkan seluruh aktiviti sepanjang program tersebut. Dalam kesibukan membuat rakaman terserempak dengan krew RTM dan bila bercerita mengenai pengalaman dan dapat tahu beliau juga adalah rakan amatur dari Melaka dengan callsign 9W2EEZ. Teruja dapat berkenalan rakan radio dan yang juga penerbit Galeri Perdana.

Beliau datang ke program ini adalah untuk merakamkan keseluruhan majlis ini untuk Galeri Perdana yang mana akan di siarkan di TV1.

2nd MALAYSIA-ASEAN SCHOOL LINKAGE PROGRAME

Sekali lagi Terengganu terpilih menjadi tempat dalam Rangkaian Sekolah-sekolah Malaysia-ASEAN Kali ke2. Dan kali ini merupakan peringkat antarabangsa. Program ni memakan masa selama 4 hari bermula 17 Jun hingga 21 Jun 2009. Memang memenatkan kerana merakamkan sepanjang aktiviti tapi bangga berkhidmat kepada negara apatah lagi di kaca mata antarabangsa.

Base Station vs QTH

Kerap kali saya terdengar ada dikalangan rakan-rakan yang sedang ke udara di Pengulang atau Simpleks (Simplex), mengenal pasti rumah (Alamat kediaman seperti dalam AA) sebagai QTH dan ada juga sebagai “Home Base”. Jika dipandang sambil lalu ianya betul pada amnya, tiada menjadi kesalahan selagi ianya difahami oleh rakan yang lain.

Merujuk kepada buku panduan “Guidelines For Amateur Radio In Malaysia” yang dikeluarkan oleh MCMC ada menerangkan mengenai jenis-jenis stesyen yang dikendalikan oleh pemegang lesen Radio Amatur: Petikan seperti berikut:-

a) The ASAA holder is permitted to install and operate any of the following amateur radio stations:

i) Amateur Radio Base Station - defined as station that is operated as per the address stated in the ASAA;
ii) Amateur Radio Mobile Station – defined as station that is operated while it is in the moving, such as in the car;
iii) Amateur Radio Portable Station – defined as station that is operated away from the registered address in the ASAA for certain duration of time; and
iv) Amateur Radio Earth Station – defined as station that working with an amateur radio satellites.

Base Station.

Menerangkan anda sedang berkomunikasi dari rumah anda seperti yang tercatat dalam ASAA (Amateur Station Apparatus Assignment) yang dikeluarkan oleh MCMC.

Mobile Station.

Menerangkan anda sedang berkomunikasi dari dalam kenderaan yang sedang bergerak diluar kawasan alamat yang tercatat dalam ASAA anda. Contoh: Dalam kereta atau atas motosikal.

Portable Station.

Menerangkan anda beroperasi dari stesyen sementara yang berada bukan dialamat yang didaftarkan dalam ASAA anda untuk jangkamasa tertentu. Contoh: Rumah keluarga di kampung.

Earth Station.

Stesyen yang menjalankan komunikasi menggunakan Satelit Amatur.

Pada amnya pengkelasan jenis stesyen tersebut sudah mencukupi untuk mengenal pasti jenis stesyen yang akan anda kendalikan, bukan mengkelasifikasikan mengikut jenis peralatan yang anda gunakan. Panggunaan “Handy” atau “Walkie Talkie” tetap dikelasifikasi mengikut kreteria seperti diatas bukannya “Portable“. Manakala “Mobile” tetap disebut “Mobile” jika anda masih didalam kenderaan anda, kecuali anda keluarkan radio anda dari kenderaan dan mula beroperasi dalam jangka masa tertentu barulah disebut “Portable“, tiada penerangan mengenai “Mobile Static” atau “Stationery Mobile“.

QTH.

Dalam bentuk percakapan (Jargon) lebih merujukan kepada kedudukan semasa atau pertanyaan. Jika pertanyaan mengengenai lokasi rumah anda, ia tetap disebut; Dimana “Base Station” anda?, kalau merujuk kepada lokasi; Dimana QTH anda sekarang, terima audio anda 4 dan 7?

Pada amnya QTH amat sesuai digunakan untuk mengenal pasti lokasi atau keadaan tempat yang tidak kekal atau berubah-rubah, manakala “Base Station“, “Mobile Station“, “Portable Station” dan “Earth Station” adalah untuk keadaan atau lokasi yang kekal walaupun untuk jangkamasa yang pendek.

Hari ini terlalu ramai orang yang tidak mengikut peraturan dan berkelakuan tidak senonoh di udara. Di sini kita ingin mengingatkan beberapa perkara.

1. Dulu Telekom mengendalikan pengurusan Radio Amateur. Kemudiannya MCMC. Selepas itu apa pula ? Kata orang tua-tua MCMC tidak akan tongkat langit. Tidakkah anda berfikir pada satu hari nanti hal ehwal Radio Amateur akan bertukar tangan ? Rekod-rekod orang yang memberi sewa lesen pada orang lain, orang yang memancar secara haram, orang yang bercakap dengan lanun, memberi rig pada lanun, menjual rig pada lanun dan memancar untuk mengganggu orang di frekuensi radio masih ada. Jika MCMC melepaskan anda, adakah penguatkuasa yang baru juga akan melepas anda ? Tahukah anda berapakah dendanya ? Jika anda seorang kakitangan kerajaan anda boleh dibuang kerja. Jika anda pernah melakukan perkara-perkara di atas, anda boleh berhenti dan jangan membuatnya lagi.

2. Pada pemilik lesen yang baharu, anda perlu tahu beberapa perkara. HAM bukanlah sekadar bercakap di radio. HAM adalah satu pakej. Mana-mana HAM boleh menegur sebarang kesilapan sebab itu adalah hak HAM untuk memelihara nama baik HAM.

3. Pakej HAM ialah - tidak mengganggui frekuensi ham dengan apa carapun, tidak 'tune' di frekuensi yang digunakan,mematuhi undang-undang, menyimpan bukulog dengan baik, tidak guna cara perhubungan lanun, bertatasusila, dan menjalankan perhubungan mengikut tertib.

4. MARTS,MARES,ASTRA, mana-mana station tidak boleh menggalakkan lanun, membenarkan orang-orang tidak berlesen bercakap atau check net. Istilah kendalian yang disalahgunakan hendaklah dimengertikan.

5. Mengetahui istilah-istilah seperti

QRT - Berhenti menghantar mesej 9 bukan tutup station )

QRX - Tunngu sebentar, saya akan panggil balik atau Saya akan memanggil balik pada...

Pulling the Big Switch (bahasa Indonesia MENDARAT ) - Tutup station.

Bagi QRX kita beritahu orang lain supaya tunggu sebentar, kita akan panggil balik.

6. Kalau ada lebih dari 2 orang, sila sebut callsign orang yang anda hendak beri mic diikuti dengan callsign anda. Jika ada 2 orang sahaja sekali sekala anda kena sebut callsign seperti di atas. Bila kita sebut callsign orang yang ditujui dan kemudian callsign anda, ia sudah bermakna 'over'. Tak sebut 'over' pun sudah difahami.

7. Perkataan 'contact' tidak digunakan oleh ham-ham yang lama, malahan tidak digunakan langsung. Anda sebut callsign anda sepenuhnya di celah-celah. Jika dalam pile-up ( Dxing ), biasa juga disebut suffixes atau prefixes sahaja. Pada local disebut callsign penuh. Ada yang menyebut 'Break' untuk meminta masuk. Tapi lebih elok dengan menyebut callsign sahaja.

8. Kali pertama kita berhubung dengan station baru, kita sebut lebih kurang begini,"...HS0AGC..this is 9M2BARU. Thank you very much for your call. My name is BARU. I spell Bravo Alfa Romeo Uniform. Your signal is five and nine ( fifty nine ). My location is NAMA TEMPAT. I spell November Alfa Mike Alfa Tango Echo Mike Papa Alfa Tango. How do you copy. Hotel Seira Zero Alfa Golf Charlie, this is nine mike two baru alfa romeo uniform...standing by..". Pada round sterusnya baharu anda beritahu cuaca, dan peswat/power/antenna yang anda gunakan. Istilah ini ialah working condition. Perhungan lokal elok digunakan carayang sama.

9. Nama perlu ringkas. Tidak digalakkan menggunakan nama MOHD SHAUFIKKI ABDUL HALIM. anda boleh guna FIK, MOHD atau HALIM atau LIM. Sebut perlahan sedikit dan eja perlahan-perlahan. Walaupun lokal, elok dieja dua kali. Kalau DX sekurang-kurangnya 1 kali jika nama itu biasa. Nama JOHN, PETER adalah dianggap biasa. Nama SUI atau POU tidak dianggap biasa bagi rakyat sesetengah negara.

10. Jika anda dengar 2 orang berbual hal-hal peribadi mereka dan anda ingin bercakap, tunggu sehingga mereka habis. Lepas itu baru panggil. Jika mereka bercakap hal-hal am dan anda ingin membantu memberi maklumat, minta masuk dengan 'break...dan callsign anda'. Jika anda menghadapi emegency anda boleh minta masuk,biasanya dengan sebutan 'mayday..mayday..'

11. Dengar sebelum memanggil CQ. Dengar dalam 10 - 15 minit. Jika tidak dengar apa-apa, anda tanya dahulu 'Is the frequency in use ?'. Jika tidak kedengaran apa-apa,barulah anda panggil CQ.

12. Anda jangan sekali-kali mengganggu ham lain di frekuensi. Kelakuan sebegini adalah tidak layak bagi seseorang HAM. Jika anda tahu seseiapa yang berbuat sedemikian, anda mesti lakukan sesuatu. Kalau tidak anda boleh dianggap bersubhat.

13. Radio Amateur bukanlah alat mana-mana parti politik. Peraturannya tidak dibuat oleh mana-mana individu. Ia tertakluk pada ITU.

14. Amateur Radio bukanlah untuk ulasan selari bolasepak atau apa-apa jua.Yang utama ialah kecemasan, bukan laporan permainan atau sukan. Frekuensi tidak boleh disekat kerana ulasan sukan atau yang lain dari kecemasan..

Ham radio a hit among Scouts and Guides

Seeking new friends: Penang Scouts Commissioner Zulkafli Kamaruddin trying to communicate with foreign Scouts via amateur radio after the opening of Jota-Joti at Wisma Pengakap.

COMMUNICATION over amateur radio (ham radio) frequencies is still a hit among Scouts and Guides at Wisma Pengakap at Penang’s 51th Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) despite the Internet.

Organising committee secretary Tan Thean Wooi said many participants found it exciting using the traditional way to communicate as they could hear the voice of their counterparts.

“It is fun talking to them over the radio instead of using the Internet where we only see written words.

“It is also an opportunity for us to build friendships with our counterparts from all over the world,” he said.

Tan was among some 350 Scouts, Girl Guides and cub Scouts from various schools on the island who gathered at the site for the JOTA and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTI).

They were so determined to have fun that even the scorching heat failed to dampen their spirits.

All they had in mind during the one-day event was to complete the various activities and take home the Challenge Badge.

State Scouts Commissioner Zulkafli Kamaruddin, who launched the event, said participants should take advantage of the event to exchange ideas and experiences with their counterparts from all over the world.

“Participation in JOTI, especially will enhance their knowledge in information technology which is growing at a fast pace,” he said in his speech.

Global contact: Scouts trying to communicate with their foreign counterparts via the Internet after the opening of the Jota-Joti.

JOTI is an international scout meeting on the Internet and is an official event of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement.

It is held in October when thousands of Scouts from all over the world would meet and communicate with each other over the Internet.

JOTI is combined with the JOTA, an event where Scouts can communicate with each other over amateur radio (ham radio) frequencies.

Improve English the ham radio way

PASIR MAS: It was a new experience for the students of SMK Tendong, Pasir Mas, who were introduced to the world of ham radio or amateur radio and its potential of helping them to improve their spoken English.

They were given the opportunity to listen to a live conversation between astronauts from the International Space Satellite and the base centre.

And they had their English teacher Yong Guan Chiong, who is a ham radio member, to thank for finding a novel way to help his students learn the English language.

The students also had the opportunity to communicate with a ham radio user in Kota Kinabalu.

“I am trying a different approach to get my students to be interested in ham radio, which is actually a good hobby.

“To communicate with those around the world you must master English.

“The mechanics of the ham radio is also related to Science and Mathematics,” said Yong.

Student Suriani Yusuf, 15, said she was amazed to hear the astronauts talking to each other.

“I never thought such a small radio could catch the live conversation between the astronauts in space and the base centre on Earth.

“I will certainly join the amateur radio community to learn more about this hobby,” she said while listening intently to the ham radio belonging to Yong.

Kamarul Zaman Abdullah, 17, who is a member of the Red Crescent, said he knew a lot about ham radio.

He added that he was also aware that ham radio was the only communication available during the Aceh tsunami tragedy.

Apa Itu Mares?

MARES adalah nama singkatan kepada Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Service society atau Persatuan Perkhidmatan Kecemasan Radio Amatur Malaysia. Angota-angota Mares terdiri dari pengemar Radio Amatur.

Apakah Tujuan Dan Matlamat MARES?

Menyediakan perkhidmatan komunikasi dari sumber tindakbalas yang luas semasa keadaan kecemasan dan bencana alam saperti banjir besar, angin puting beliung, kemalangan yang mengancam ramai nyawa, kebakaran dalam bentuk besar/luas dan insiden hazmat kepada kapal terbang terhempas sehingga jalur komunikasi biasa samaada tidak berfungsi atau sudah terlalu padat kegunaanya. Menyediakan sistem interegasi komunikasi kecemasan antara jabatan kerajaan saperti Bomba & Penyelamat, Jabatan Pertahanan Awam (JPA3), PDRM, Bulan Sabit, Hospital, TUDM, DCA dan lain-lain lagi yang terlibat dalam kerja-kerja mencari dan menyelamat (SAR) Matlamat disini adalah untuk menyediakan satu sistem komunikasi yang efisyen.
Menggalakkan perkembangan am sains dan penggunaan Komunikasi Radio / Satelit & Digital disemua peringkat masyarakat tidak mengira umur, pangkat atau keturunan terutama sekali kepada golongan penuntut-penuntut sekolah, Kolej, IPT dan juga golongan remaja secara tidak langsung. Mares membantu kerajaan menuju wawasan 2020 dan menyediakan remaja yang berkualiti.

Mengeratkan tali silatul rahim antara ahli2 Radio Amatur Malaysia tidak mengira bangsa agama dan keturunan sesuai dengan etika Radio Amatur.

Apa itu RADIO AMATUR?

Radio Amatur ataupun juga dikenali “Radio Amateur / Ham Radio” ialah satu hobi berkenaan membina,menguji-kaji dan berkomunikasi melalui radio, satelit, digital dll. Pengguna-pengguna radio amatur ini saling berhubungan dengan rakan-rakan mereka di seluruh dunia melalui beberapa set-set frekuensi radio yang telah ditetapkan. Di Malaysia terdapat lebih kurang 1,200 pengemar Radio Amatur yang berlesen. Untuk mendapatkan lesen Radio Amatur seseorang itu harus menduduki ujian Radio Amatur yang di kendalikan oleh Suruhanjaya Muntimedia Dan Komunikasi Malaysia. Terdapat lebih 100,000 Radio Amatur di Amarika, Jepun , Indonesia, Thailand dll Ahli2 Radio Amatur telah banyak membantu dalam Komunikasi Kecemasan contoh bila berlaku banjir besar, Gempa Bumi, kejadian 11 Sep WTC di Amerika dan lain-lain lagi

A good system to indicate signal quality has been around for some time. The three numbers below suggest signal quality, signal strength and tone quality. That last number is only for CW operations while the first two are used to evaluate both CW and SSB signals.

You will hear something similar used for PSK31 signals. In this case, the signal strength is the most interesting attribute.

During some quick contests, you will often hear voice operators giving 59 reports regardless of the actual signal quality. Some contests require the signal report as part of the exchange, but operators have grown tired of these kind of requirements so they routinely just say “you’re 59″ and move on.

R = Readability:
R 1 - Unreadable
R 2 - Barely readable, some words occasionally distinguishable
R 3 - Readable, but with considerable difficulty
R 4 - Readable with practically no difficulty
R 5 - Perfectly readable

S = Signal Strength:
S 1 - Faint signal, barely perceptible
S 2 - Very weak signal
S 3 - Weak signal
S 4 - Fair signal
S 5 - Fairly good signal
S 6 - Good signal
S 7 - Moderately strong signal
S 8 - Strong signal
S 9 - Extremely strong signal

T = CW TONE
T 1 - 50 / 60 hertz a.c., very rough & broad
T 2 - Very rough a.c., harsh & broad
T 3 - Rough a.c. tone, rectified but not filtered
T 4 - Rough note, some trace of filtering
T 5 - Filtered rectified a.c. but strongly ripple-modulated
T 6 - Filtered tone, definite trace of ripple modulation
T 7 - Near pure tone, trace of ripple modulation
T 8 - Near perfect tone, slight trace of modulation
T 9 - Pure Tone, no trace of ripple or modulation of any kind

OPERASI MENCARI DAN MENYELAMAT DI GUNUNG YONG YAP

URGENT! Segera! Segera!

Satu operasi mencari dan menyelamat (SAR) telah dilancarkan bagi mengesan seorang pendaki gunung yang hilang di sekitar Kawasan Gunung Yong Yap di Sempadan Perak dan Kelantan.

MARES telah diminta memberikan bantuan komunikasi kepada agensi-agensi yang terlibat dalam misi SAR berkenaan.

Mana-mana rakan ham, tidak kira dari kelab/persatuan radio amatur mana sekalipun, adalah dijemput untuk membantu misi berkenaan.

Nelayan dikesan guna peralatan buatan Thailand, China

TUMPAT: Kegiatan mengguna peralatan set radio dua hala atau radio amatur yang tidak mempunyai kelulusan Sirim oleh nelayan negeri ini boleh menyebabkan mereka berdepan denda sehingga RM100,000 jika ditahan pihak berkuasa.

Jurucakap Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia (SKMM) berkata walaupun nelayan terbabit menggunakan kelengkapan radio itu untuk tujuan perhubungan di tengah laut, namun pemilikan peralatan yang tidak diluluskan itu adalah satu kesalahan.

Katanya, pemeriksaan terhadap nelayan negeri ini mendapati mereka banyak menggunakan set radio perhubungan dua hala itu yang dibawa masuk dari Thailand dan China pada harga antara RM300 hingga RM400 satu set.

"Sebahagian besar nelayan tempatan menggunakan set radio amatur keluaran Thailand dan China untuk berhubung di tengah laut kerana harganya jauh lebih murah berbanding alatan yang diluluskan Sirim yang dijual pada harga antara RM2,000 hingga RM3,000.

"Kebanyakan nelayan tidak tahu yang penggunaan set radio amatur tanpa kelulusan boleh menyebabkan mereka didakwa didakwa mengikut Seksyen 239 Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998 kerana memiliki, membekal atau menggunakan alatan komunikasi yang tidak mengikut standard ditetapkan.

"Jika disabitkan kesalahan, nelayan terbabit boleh dikenakan denda sehingga RM100,000 atau penjara dua tahun atau kedua-duanya sekali," katanya di sini, semalam.

Terdahulu, Pasukan Gerakan Marin Pengkalan Kubur diketuai Pegawai Pemerintahnya, Deputi Superintendan Tan Cheng San bersama wakil SKMM dari Cyberjaya menjalankan pemeriksaan terhadap penggunaan set radio amatur oleh lebih 10 bot nelayan.

Pemeriksaan dijalankan di Jeti Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM) dekat Geting, dekat sini mendapati sebahagian besar bot terbabit menggunakan set radio amatur buatan Thailand dan China yang kualitinya tidak terjamin.

Sementara itu, Tan berkata, pemeriksaan yang dilakukan pihaknya sebelum ini mendapati kebanyakan nelayan tempatan menggunakan peralatan komunikasi buatan luar yang tidak diluluskan kerajaan.

Sehubungan itu, beliau berkata, pihaknya membuat aduan kepada pihak SKMM supaya segera membuat pemantauan dan memeriksa sendiri bot yang ditahan.

"Lebih 10 bot yang diperiksa didapati menggunakan peralatan tanpa lesen dan permit, biasanya kita mudah mengesan bot nelayan yang menggunakan peralatan tanpa kelulusan berdasarkan antena di atas bot yang mereka gunakan," katanya.

Hams in Australia Assist with Massive Brushfires

In the Australian state of Victoria, Amateur Radio operators have been activated to provide communications links into towns that have had their normal communications destroyed by the bushfires that have decimated the state. Members of the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network in Victoria (WICEN (Vic)) -- Australia's version of ARES® -- were activated on February 8, with members being deployed to areas with loss of power and other facilities.

According to the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) -- that country's IARU Member-Society -- authorities and resources in Victoria have been "stretched to the limit." WICEN has been on high alert since the fires started on January 28. On February 11, WICEN (Vic) Secretary Mark Dods, VK3XMU, said, "It now appears that WICEN's role in this emergency is going to be a long hard marathon over an extended period."

World Amateur Radio Day to Recognize Amateur Radio's Role in Disaster Communications

Each year on April 18, radio amateurs celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. On that day in 1925, 84 years ago, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) was founded. In 2009, the theme of the event is Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication.

"It is not by coincidence that last year's meeting of the IARU Administrative Council (AC) chose this subject at this time," said IARU International Coordinator for Emergency Communication Hans Zimmermann, F5VKP/HB9AQS. "While the Amateur Radio Service has traditionally made its contributions to emergency and disaster response ever since its very beginnings almost 100 years ago, this role has gained a lot of importance just in the recent past."

Citing the fact that natural, as well as manmade disasters are on the rise, Zimmermann pointed out that today's modern communication technologies are "increasingly complex, infrastructure-dependent and therefore also increasingly vulnerable. The Amateur Radio Service puts two equally valuable assets at its disposal for emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness and response: A large number of very flexible and mostly infrastructure-independent, local, national, regional and global networks, and a large number of skilled operators, who know how to communicate with often very limited means and to establish communications even under the most difficult circumstances."

Zimmermann said that the tools available to Amateur Radio operators "range from the most robust means such as battery-operated stations operating in Morse code, to links through Amateur Radio satellites and interconnectivity with the Internet, in voice, text, image and data modes. They range from local VHF networks of fixed, mobile and portable stations to shortwave networks that span the globe. All these networks are operated on a daily basis by men and women who are thoroughly familiar with their technology and their intricacies."

Saying that "telecommunications have become a commodity that society takes for granted," Zimmermann stated that "The sudden loss of that service is often felt in a similar way to the loss of shelter, food and medical support. When disasters occur in regions that do not have good coverage by public networks -- or when existing communications infrastructures have just been disrupted or destroyed by such events -- the Amateur Radio Service comes to the rescue. Amateur Radio operators provide communications for the rescuers and relief workers and their organizations and they help to provide communications for those affected by a disaster."

Zimmermann continued: "In fact, contributions to emergency and disaster relief are a major argument for the preservation and the extension of the privileges the Amateur Radio Service enjoys in international and national regulations. This is one of the reasons why more and more Amateur Radio operators -- through their clubs and their national societies -- prepare very seriously for their role in emergencies; however, their skills can be put to use only if they are known by other first responders. Effective response to emergencies can only occur with the work of volunteers in all the various fields, from search and rescue to medical assistance and those who can provide food and shelter. Communication skills are a new, but equally vital commodity."

Gerhana bulan penumbra

Orang ramai di seluruh Malaysia berpeluang menyaksikan gerhana bulan penumbra pada Isnin ini selama empat jam bermula 8.39 malam.

Agensi Angkasa Negara (Angkasa) dalam satu kenyataan berkata gerhana itu gerhana penumbra paling mudah dilihat dengan mata kasar (boleh dilihat di semua negeri) kerana 89.9 peratus daripada cakera bulan berada di bayang penumbra bumi ketika fasa maksimum.

“Secara amnya gerhana bulan akan berlaku ketika fasa bulan penuh dan pada masa sama bulan melintasi bayang bumi.

“Gerhana ini akan bermula dengan fasa satu (penumbra) jam 8.39 malam waktu Malaysia. Gerhana maksimum pula akan berlaku jam 10.38 malam dengan bulan akan keluar sepenuhnya dari bayang penumbra bumi (fasa empat) jam 12.38 tengah malam,” katanya, semalam.

Singapore now offers temporary ham radio licences

I just received the information, that Singapore (9V) now offers reciprocal licences. Peter, 9V1PC sent the following email:

The Singapore Amateur Radio Transmitting Society (SARTS) are pleased to advise that the Singapore licensing authority, the Infocommunications Development Agency (iDA), have recently announced that temporary Amateur licences are now available to radio hams visiting Singapore.

Tha application should be made 3 weeks before arrival in Singapore and the license is typically valid for a 3 months period using the callsign 9V1/Homecall. A fee of 50 Singapore Dollars will apply. The application process and forms are posted on the iDA website.

Semalam (15/12/2008) sempat eyeball rakan-rakan MARES Kelantan dengan membawa bersama 9W2EDS, seronok jugak dapat berjumpa dengan meraka apalagi 9M2CIO disamping 9w2AEA, 9W2DDI dan 9W2FOX. Kesempatan di ambil sewaktu tengah kursus di Kota Bharu.
